Upcoming Exhibitions and Shows |
|
Les Woodrum will be exhibiting his photography in at least two local shows this season. The first is coming up on June 22-23. This will be the annual Danville Art in the Park. Les will also be exhibiting at the Salt Fork River Art Festival at the Sleepy Creek Vineyard in Late September. Both of these shows have become favorites for Les to exhibit at.
Les began his career back in 1977 exhibiting in the original Danville Art League Art in the Park show winning a third place finish. In recent years, he has won the Photography Division several times, a Best of Show Award in the Danville Art League Show, and numerous purchase awards. |

 |
The Salt Fork River Art Festival is just a real fun time with lots of music, great wine (since it is held at the Sleepy Creek Vineyard), and good food. I hope to see all of you at one of these shows.
Les is currently in negotiations with a prestigious gallery in Chicago to exhibit his work. When this show is finalized, all of you will be the first to know. |

| Digital Notes |
Backing up photo files is one of the most important issues that concern me when it comes to digital photography. I have always had a rule that I must have two back-up copies prior to reformatting a camera disk.
With the ever-increasing file size of today’s digital cameras, this is becoming more difficult to accomplish. Ten years ago, one was able to place 150-200 images on a CD. But with cameras now recording in the 15-23mp range, a person is sometimes lucky to get 50-75 images on a CD. And since I still use medium format film for many of my art photos, these images can have file sizes upwards of 120mb in size. At that size, I can only get 4 images on a CD.
So what is the cure to get those digital files backed up? Since last October, I have subscribed to Carbonite on-line back-up service.
There are many back-up services available and they all operate about the same. In my situation, I utilize a 2TB external hard-drive to save the first copy. Then behind the scenes, Carbonite comes in and backs up any new files automatically.
If you are a new user to on-line back-up, there are a couple of things that you might need to be aware of. First, if you have multiple computers or external hard-drives, there is an extra fee for that. It cost me about $115.00 per year to back-up a PC, a Mac and an external hard-drive.
The second thing to be aware of is how long the initial first-time back-up will take. The initial backup of my entire system took 34 days – YES, 34 DAYS. But now that the entire system is backed up, you do not even notice when your computer is backing up to the on-line service.
One big advantage now is that I can access my photos from almost any place on any computer on-line. |

French Canyon Falls – Starved Rock State Park
Less than a 2-1/2 hour drive from Danville is a wonderful park if you like to photograph waterfalls. Starved Rock State Park near Ottawa, IL features dozens of canyons and 19 waterfalls. The day I was there, seven or eight of the falls were inaccessible due to floods on the Illinois River. But that also meant there was plenty of water falling at the falls I could get to.
Camera – Canon XSi with 18-55mm lens
Exposure – 1 second at f/16 – 100 ISO (Shot in RAW format) |
